Creative Guild

Innovation Is an Adventure: Bring a Map, a Compass, and a Guide
Guests: Takahisa Kusuura, Head of Hatsumei Juku, and Shin Yamamoto

Back to the Japanese version.

“No matter what happens, each day can still become the best day for you.” Guided by this concept, Creative Guild core member Yoshie Aruga hosts the radio program It’s Always Sunny! Above the Clouds, the Sun Is Always Shining. The guests in this tenth episode are Takahisa Kusuura, head of Hatsumei Juku and CEO of TechnoProducer Inc., and Shin Yamamoto, who supports new business creation in the medical and healthcare fields. Using the metaphor of innovation as an adventure, their conversation explores what people and organizations need to begin something new and carry it through to implementation.

Kusuura and Yamamoto first met around twenty years ago through an intellectual property management study group. They came from different professional backgrounds and became connected through the group’s activities. Kusuura supports corporate innovation through invention and intellectual property strategy, while Yamamoto expanded his work from biotechnology and healthcare into the practical facilitation of innovation. Because they have followed each other’s work for many years, the conversation quickly moves to a fundamental question: how can a new idea be guided all the way to realization?

One of Yamamoto’s major turning points came while he was working for a foreign-affiliated company and presenting proposals to its overseas headquarters. Even carefully prepared words and materials did not always convey what he wanted to communicate. During a break, however, he explained the idea using a rough sketch, and the message suddenly landed. The experience led him to realize that effective communication may depend less on the volume of words and more on making one’s thinking visible. He then began learning methods such as mind mapping and dialogue using physical blocks to visualize ideas and create shared understanding.

Yamamoto later encountered the work of Dutch innovation practitioner Gijs van Wulfen. One of the most memorable ideas introduced in the episode is that innovation is both an adventure and a maze. To begin an adventure, we need a map to understand where we are and what paths may be available, a compass to confirm our direction, and a guide to help us move safely through unfamiliar territory. The same is true of new business creation. An idea and strong passion are not enough on their own. A shared process, a way to check direction, and someone who can accompany the team through uncertainty all help move a challenge closer to implementation.

Yamamoto began this work inside a large organization without sufficient authority, budget, or staff. His message to colleagues was simple: “If you want to try something new or use a new way of working, please come and talk to me.” He started by listening to consultations, structuring the situation, and helping the people involved move toward a point where they could make a shared decision. In this sense, a facilitator is not merely someone who keeps a meeting running smoothly. A facilitator is a guide who supports a team until it can reach an answer and make a decision.

Another important theme is preventing challengers from becoming isolated. Yamamoto explains that he does not necessarily want to be the hero himself. His role is closer to helping heroes remain heroes. In medicine and research, many people work with a powerful sense of purpose and devote themselves to improving society. Yet passion alone can lead people to overextend themselves and eventually burn out. Sharing a map, practical tools, a process, and a sustainable pace is therefore important not only for producing results, but also for protecting the people who take on difficult challenges.

New business projects do not stop only because an idea or technology is weak. They can also stall because the value is not fully communicated inside the organization, preventing a decision or budget from being secured. That is why teams need ways to visualize their thinking, share customer value and possible paths forward, and guide stakeholders through consensus building. There are also times when the right professional judgment is to say, “Do not start yet,” because the necessary conditions are not in place. This is not a rejection of the challenge. It is a way to avoid unnecessary exhaustion and create the conditions for success.

Near the end of the episode, the guests introduce a sharp question for anyone considering transformation: “Are our customers changing faster than our own organization?” Even as terms such as digital transformation and AI become widespread, introducing a tool does not automatically change how work is done or how an organization operates. Customers, meanwhile, may already be adopting new services and new ways of working, and their expectations continue to evolve. Facing that gap directly can become the starting point for an organization’s next move.

This episode invites us to see innovation not as work reserved for a small number of exceptionally talented people, but as an adventure for which we can prepare. Before rushing forward on passion alone, we can ask whether we have a map, whether our compass is working, and whether there is a guide we can consult. That small act of preparation can turn a temporary experiment into a sustainable practice that reaches an organization and, ultimately, society.

At Creative Guild, we share stories from practitioners like these as part of our Creative Learning series. If you have an idea you want to move forward but feel stuck on your own, begin by drawing your thinking on a single page. Then show it to someone who can help you confirm the direction. An adventure does not begin by carrying everything alone. It begins by opening the map and checking your current location together with trusted companions. Watch the episode.
