小倉城がひらく、歴史と地域文化の新しい未来

「お城って、こんなに自由で面白かったんだ。」

Creative Guildの仲間たちが生み出した商品やサービスと、その背景にある想いを届けていくギルド・マーケット。今回は、北九州のパートナー 一般社団法人まちはチームだの岡秀樹さん（Guild名鑑No.100）たちが運営する「小倉城」をご紹介します。福岡県唯一の天守閣を持つ小倉城は、いま「日本一おもしろき城」をコンセプトに、全国でも珍しい“体験型エンターテイメント城”として進化を続けています。

北九州市の中心、小倉駅より徒歩10分ほどにある小倉城。1602年に細川忠興が本格築城した「唐造り」の天守が特徴の「勝山城」とも呼ばれる名城です。豊前国（現在の福岡県東部）の拠点として、細川氏や小笠原氏が治め、九州の要衝でした。1837年の火災後に再建されず、1959年に市民の熱望により現在の天守が再建されました。

そして2019年に大幅リニューアル。宮本武蔵などの歴史資料の展示だけでなく、デジタル技術を活用した“なりきり体験”や武将隊などのエンターテイメントも充実。“歴史を学ぶ”だけではなく、“歴史の中に入る”体験へとアップデートされています。また、日本で唯一の天守閣最上階のカフェ＆バーも運営。貸し切りでのパーティーなどのイベントにも対応しています。

こうした進化し続ける小倉城の背景には、まちはチームだ で培ってきた地域への想いがあります。いかに地域の歴史や文化を、“いま”の人たちが楽しめる形に翻訳するか。そして、そこで生まれた人のつながりや想いを、どうやって次のアクションへつなげていくか。前例に捉われず、いまの時代に合った楽しみ方を考えながら、ビジョンを共有して一歩ずつ動いていく。その姿勢が表れた空間が、小倉城と言えるのです。

そして小倉城のもう一つの魅力は、天守閣単体ではなく、周辺地域も巻き込んだ体験のデザイン。近いところでは池泉回遊式の日本庭園である小倉城庭園では、お茶のプロの先生方による茶の湯体験ができ、ゆかりのお土産はしろテラスで買うことができます。また、地域の商店・飲食店とも連携したイベントも多数。遠方からの来訪者だけでなく、地元で暮らす方たちが地域をもっと好きになり楽しめる仕掛けが満載なのです。

地元の歴史や文化に興味を持ってもらいたい、知ってもらいたい。それはどの地域でも同じです。しかしながら、一つのやり方に拘り過ぎてしまっては、せっかくの価値が伝わらなくなってしまうことも否定できません。一方で過去があるからこそ未来につながる、だからこれまでのやり方を否定する必要もありません。重要なことはいかに再統合するか。伝統と革新は融合できるのです。そのことを小倉城の場は教えてくれているのかもしれません。

小倉城は１年を通じてお祭りなどのイベントを随時開催しています。

Japan’s Most Entertaining Castle
Kokura Castle and a New Future for History and Regional Culture

“I never knew a castle could be this free and exciting.”

Guild Market is a Creative Guild initiative that introduces products, services, and the passions behind the people creating them. This time, we’d like to introduce Kokura Castle, operated by Hideki Oka (Guild Directory No.100) and the team behind the Kitakyushu-based initiative “Machi wa Team da.” As the only castle keep in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kokura Castle has evolved into one of Japan’s most unique “experiential entertainment castles” under the concept of “Japan’s Most Entertaining Castle.”

Located about ten minutes from Kokura Station in central Kitakyushu, Kokura Castle is a historic castle originally built in 1602 by Hosokawa Tadaoki. Known for its rare architectural style called Karazukuri, the castle once served as a strategic center of Buzen Province, an important gateway to Kyushu ruled by the Hosokawa and Ogasawara clans. After being destroyed by fire in 1837, the castle remained absent for more than a century until local citizens strongly pushed for its reconstruction in 1959. Then, in 2019, Kokura Castle underwent a major renewal.

Today, visitors can enjoy not only historical exhibitions featuring figures such as Miyamoto Musashi, but also immersive digital experiences, samurai transformation activities, and live performances by the castle’s samurai team. Rather than simply “learning history,” guests are invited to step inside history itself. The castle also operates Japan’s only café and bar located on the top floor of a castle keep, where private events and parties can also be held.

Behind Kokura Castle’s continuing evolution lies the philosophy cultivated through the activities of “Machi wa Team da.” The goal is not simply to preserve regional history and culture, but to translate them into experiences that people today can genuinely enjoy.　Just as importantly, the project asks how the connections and emotions created through these experiences can lead to future actions and collaborations. Without being trapped by precedent, the team continuously experiments with ways to make history meaningful for the present era while steadily moving forward with a shared vision. That mindset is deeply embedded throughout Kokura Castle itself.

Another unique strength of Kokura Castle is that the experience extends beyond the castle keep alone and spreads throughout the surrounding area. Nearby, visitors can enjoy tea ceremony experiences led by professional tea masters at Kokura Castle Garden, a traditional Japanese strolling garden. Regional gifts and local specialties can be found at Shiro Terrace, while numerous collaborations with local restaurants, shops, and cultural events continue throughout the year.

As a result, Kokura Castle is designed not only for tourists visiting from far away, but also for local residents to rediscover and enjoy their own city in new ways. Every region hopes people will become interested in its history and culture. Yet if we become too attached to only one way of presenting tradition, its value may gradually stop reaching people. At the same time, because the past exists, we are able to create the future — there is no need to reject what came before. What truly matters is how we reintegrate tradition and innovation together. Kokura Castle quietly teaches us that those two things can coexist.

Throughout the year, Kokura Castle hosts festivals, cultural programs, projection mapping events, food events, and seasonal celebrations. Visitors can spend a relaxing day exploring the castle and surrounding area, or even extend a business trip into a workation experience using nearby coworking spaces such as DISCOVERY coworking and Himitsukichi.
