Creative Learning

You Can Begin Without a Clear Dream
Guest: Takahisa Kusuura, CEO of TechnoProducer Inc. and Head of Hatsumei Juku

“No matter what happens, each day can still become the best day for you.” Guided by this idea, Creative Guild core member Yoshie Aruga hosts It’s Always Sunny! Above the Clouds, the Sun Is Always Shining. In Vol.14, Takahisa Kusuura, Head of Hatsumei Juku, returns for a conversation following his August talk for young people at the Dream Rocket Project. At its heart is his phrase nantoka naru yaro: a feeling that we can find a way forward. The conversation offers some breathing room for people who feel uncertain about their future.

Through changing jobs and starting businesses, Kusuura has repeatedly left familiar settings and learned to work in new ones. Trying something different showed him that things could turn out better than he expected. Those experiences gradually built his confidence. We do not necessarily need certainty before beginning; we can develop it through trying.

One message he wanted young people to hear was that they do not have to possess a clearly defined dream. Pressure to settle on a dream or goal can raise the bar we set for ourselves. We can discover what we want to do through different experiences. School subjects alone should not narrow our possibilities: if something interests us, we can try it even when we struggle with part of it. Kusuura recalls studying engineering and working in design despite finding mathematics difficult.

Decisions also have a timing of their own. We need to recognize what must be decided now and avoid rushing choices that can wait. In our relationships, too, asking everyone to think or speak in the same way can obscure their strengths. Kusuura describes encouraging participants in Hatsumei Juku to learn from one another’s ideas rather than impose their own methods. Working with differences and producing results together can also strengthen the feeling that we can find a way.

That feeling does not mean ignoring concerns. As a business leader, Kusuura considers the worst case while approaching the work with optimism. Preparing this talk brought another discovery: a team member used AI to organize his past materials and identified nantoka naru yaro as a phrase he often used without noticing it. Entrusting the work to someone else led to a fresh insight and an opportunity for the team to grow.

For Creative Learning, the invitation is to recognize that we can keep learning from experience even when our future is not fully defined. Choose one thing that interests you and try it on a small scale. First, consider what worries you and how far you can comfortably experiment. Those small steps may gradually build your own sense that you can find a way forward.
