Creative Guild

From 50 Onward, Connection Can Become More Open
Takashi Goto and Mai Edo on Oshiruco, a Safe Community for Opening New Possibilities in the Second Half of Life

Back to the Japanese version.

“No matter what happens, each day can still become the best day for you.” With this idea at its heart, Creative Guild core member Yoshie Aruga hosts the radio program It’s Always Sunny! Above the Clouds, the Sun Is Always Shining. The guests for Vol.13 are Takashi Goto, Representative Director of CAYTO Inc., and Mai Edo from the same company. CAYTO operates Oshiruco, a community app exclusively for people aged fifty and older. This episode introduces a timely question for a hundred-year life: how can we create safe, meaningful relationships after reaching what may be only the halfway point?

Oshiruco began in 2018 as a community exclusively for people aged fifty and over. Identity verification is required, and members can share everyday experiences and interests through diaries, groups, and chats. The community now has more than 110,000 registered users. Limiting participation by age may initially seem restrictive. Yet a clearly defined audience can make the space easier to enter because people understand who it is for and what kind of interaction they can expect.

Life often changes around the age of fifty. Work, family responsibilities, health, and established relationships may all begin to shift, even though many years still lie ahead. At that point, it becomes increasingly valuable to meet people beyond one’s existing circle and to share daily life through common interests. Oshiruco suggests that connection in the second half of life is not only a way to replace something that has been lost. It can also expand what a person wants to try next.

Online communities are often evaluated by their number of users or posts. What supports a person, however, may be something quieter: the sense that someone will be there, and that one’s words will be received. A response to a diary entry, participation in a group built around a shared interest, or a brief exchange in a chat may seem small. Over time, these interactions become memories of not being alone and can give someone the confidence to take another step.

Safety does not have to restrict free interaction. Appropriate boundaries, such as identity verification and an age requirement, can give members more freedom to choose how they participate. Some may join every day. Others may appear only when a particular subject interests them. Some may begin simply by reading. A sustainable community does not demand the same level of participation from everyone. It allows people to find a distance and rhythm that fit their energy and circumstances.

The name CAYTO is associated with the Japanese idea of meguru: cycles, encounters, and the way people and work come together. The company aims to return its knowledge of information technology to everyday life by creating new value for people. Technology does not have to keep people behind screens. It can help them meet people they would not otherwise encounter and give those relationships room to grow. Oshiruco is a practical expression of that idea in the lives of people over fifty.

The initiative is not limited to the app. CAYTO is expanding its work through partnerships with municipalities and companies, participation in local events, and in-person programs such as the Oshiruco Senior Dining gatherings. Rather than choosing between digital and face-to-face connection, the aim is to create more entry points and let people engage in ways that suit them. This approach treats loneliness and social isolation not merely as private problems, but as issues that communities and social systems can address together.

Creative Guild also values relationships that begin with curiosity and enjoyment, regardless of age or title. It is never too late to form a new connection. In fact, the experience and interests accumulated over many years can make relationships after fifty especially rich. Instead of viewing the second half of life as time remaining, we can see it as time for creating new routines with new companions. That change in perspective can open possibilities that were not visible before.

If you feel that opportunities to talk with others or go somewhere new have become less frequent, begin with one subject that interests you and respond to someone with a few words. A small act of participation is enough. One greeting exchanged in a place that feels safe may lead to the next source of enjoyment, a new companion, and something new you want to try.
