Film Director or Graphic Designer? The Origins of a Master at Finding the Fun | Manabu Onodera, Episode 2
“OMOBIZ! — Interesting Business Instigators from Minato,” brought to you by members of Creative Guild, introduces fascinating people and themes while exploring ideas for the future of society and business through lively dialogue. The program is hosted by Tetsuya Miki, who draws out the interesting side of people and business from his own distinctive angle, and Zack, known as “AI Papa”, who makes AI and digital technology feel approachable as tools for learning.
The guest once again is Manabu Onodera, Representative Director of Goo Choki Partners Inc. Based in Toranomon, his work spans art and design, video, events, and community projects. Episode 1 moved rapidly from the contrast between his intimidating appearance and playful humor to the story of Kamotora Kacho and his involvement in the neighborhood. Episode 2 goes further, exploring where his ability to find the fun comes from—including the failures and formative experiences behind it.

Reframing Failure as a Story People Can Laugh About
The conversation opens with a question generated by AI: Has someone as skilled as Onodera at finding things interesting ever gone through a period or moment that he simply could not enjoy? His answer is unexpectedly candid. He says he has “fallen flat plenty of times.” Ideas that seemed funny to him did not always connect with others, and being scolded was hardly unusual.
Some experiments at local events were misunderstood. On another occasion, a large paella pan was set over a strikingly intense flame on a Toranomon street, leaving the people around it almost speechless. Sometimes an idea stops just short of becoming funny; sometimes it crosses the boundary of what others can comfortably enjoy. Yet Onodera does not hide these failures. He later re-edits them into stories people can laugh about. His way of “finding the fun” is not simple optimism—it is a practice of trying, missing the mark, and learning again.
A Habit That Began in Childhood
Where did that practice begin? Onodera grew up in Ichikawa, Chiba; he was not originally a Toranomon local. As a child, he enjoyed inventing comedy material and performances to make other people laugh, and one of his viewer submissions was even selected by a television comedy program. The habit of imagining something entertaining and then actually putting it into the world was already taking shape in his early years.
Film Director or Graphic Designer?
At home, he was also exposed to movies and art. He collected film flyers and once imagined becoming a film director. When it came time to choose a path, he found himself comparing two possibilities: film director or graphic designer. He ultimately chose design, joking that “graphic designer” simply looked cooler written in katakana. Even a major life decision was approached from a slightly off-center, playful angle—a very Onodera-like choice.
He went on to build experience in commercial production, design studios, and advertising-related creative work before establishing Goo Choki Partners Inc. in 2016. His desire to make films, instinct to entertain people, skill in giving ideas visual form, and relationships developed in Toranomon are not separate strands of his career. Together, they form one continuous practice: editing whatever is in front of him into work that people can find genuinely interesting.
A “master at finding the fun” is not someone who has always been able to turn everything into laughter. Perhaps Onodera notices the discomfort, gaps, and overlooked possibilities around him precisely because he has accumulated so many attempts—including ideas that failed and moments when he was criticized. Film director or graphic designer? Moving beyond that either-or choice, he continues to create new stories between people and the city. Watch the full episode to experience both the wildness and sensitivity at the origins of his work.
