Walking Through the City Makes 1-on-1s More Equal
Report on the Walking-Based 1-on-1 Practical Training in Ryogoku
On , we held the Walking-Based 1-on-1 Practical Training in the streets of Ryogoku. Eight people, including the organizers, took part. Working in pairs, they practiced 1-on-1s while walking through the city for approximately 40–45 minutes.
Participants shared positive comments such as, “It was a lot of fun,” “I felt that my partner really listened to me,” and “I gained a perspective different from my own.” Their natural expressions in the photographs also capture the atmosphere of the day.
Walking and talking created a natural distance from everyday work and immediate tasks, making it easier to focus on the conversation. Even when the dialogue paused, the surrounding scenery, sounds of the city, and interesting shops offered new starting points. Conversations could wander without becoming stressful, bringing out ideas, interests, and feelings that had remained buried or not yet been put into words.
The experience also revealed sides of each person that can be difficult to see in a meeting room—their reactions, interests, walking pace, and choice of route. Because the roles of listener and speaker did not become fixed, walking side by side created a more equal dialogue in which both participants gained insights.
Many participants had rarely visited Ryogoku, so discovering the neighborhood itself provided a welcome stimulus. They were free to stop at a standing bar, talk in a café, or follow a street that caught their attention. Even getting lost became a shared experience that encouraged natural self-disclosure and psychological safety.
The group ended the program at a Mongolian restaurant, reflecting together over a meal. This was part of the program rather than simply a social gathering. Through the shared experience of encountering another culture, participants brought together what they had learned in their separate 1-on-1s and expanded it into learning for the whole group.
This format can be applied to team building, the launch of a community or project, management training, and team reflection. Creative Guild will continue creating opportunities for natural connection through dialogue that draws on the city, culture, and food, including multilingual versions for people from diverse backgrounds.
