たとえば動画の中では、「8つの数字から6つを選んで合計を53にする」という問題が紹介されます。多くの人はどの6つを選ぶかを考えますが、小倉さんはあえて「選ばない2つ」に着目する視点を示します。どこを見るかによって解き方が変わる。この考え方は、売上を増やすだけでなくコストを見直すといったビジネスの意思決定にも通じています。

OmoBiz! Why “Time Spent Thinking” Matters More Than the Right Answer
Learning for the AI Era with Math Instructor Yuji Ogura

“OmoBiz! Our guest this time is Yuji Ogura, a mathematics instructor who teaches at prep schools and institutions such as the N High School group. Through math, he has been consistently dedicated to helping people develop their ability to think.

In the video, he introduces a simple yet thought-provoking problem:
“Choose 6 numbers out of 8 so that their total is 53.”

Most people try to figure out which six numbers to add. However, Ogura suggests a different approach—focus instead on the two numbers you don’t choose. Where you direct your attention completely changes how you solve the problem. This shift in perspective also applies to business: instead of only trying to increase revenue, you might look at reducing costs. The key lies in where you choose to look.

This perspective offers valuable insights for how children learn as well. Rather than focusing only on whether they get the correct answer, what truly matters is how much they think and how they approach the problem. Even if the answer is wrong, recognizing the effort and process helps children develop their own thinking ability. Ogura emphasizes that the essence of learning lies in the moment when a student suddenly says, “I got it!”—when their eyes light up with understanding. That sense of discovery and excitement naturally leads to further learning.

Math is often seen as difficult, but at its core, it holds a sense of beauty, structure, and even playfulness.
