港区を起点にいろんなところで働く・暮らす、楽しい時間を創りたい人たちによるコミュニティCreative Guild。このギルド名鑑ではそんなCreative Guildでつながったユニークな方々をご紹介しています。今回ご紹介するのは、apts.jp（アップツ・ドット・ジェイピー株式会社）のコーリー・ジョーンズさん。地域にある空き家に着目し、ローカル＝地域社会とグローバル＝外国人を“ひと”と“ひと”でつなぐチャレンジに取り組んでいます。

コーリーさんはアメリカ・ノースカロライナ州の出身。ホテルの現場などを経験してきているほか、コミュニティ活動の運営やメンバー支援にも携わり、多様な“ひと”に向き合い、つなぐ経験を積んできました。その後日本に拠点を移し、不動産領域へ。とくに地域にある空き家に着目し、地域の文化的・歴史的価値を大切にしながら活かしていく取り組みを推進。現在は、外国人の方の日本での住まい探しをサポートするapts.jpのメンバーとして、国や地域を超えて“ひと”をつないでいっています。

そんなコーリーさんが大事にしていることは“善さ”です。一人ひとりが本質的に持っている“ひと”としての在り方、その地域が長い時間をかけて育んできた、目には見えないけれど確かに感じられる価値。そして違いがあるからこそ見えてくる、新しい可能性。だからこそグローバルな視点でローカルに触れ、 “ひと”にも、ものごとにも丁寧に、けれど自然体で向き合うことができます。そうして紡がれたつながりを、みんなの財産として大切にしていることも、コーリーさんの魅力のひとつです。

地方創生や地域活性という言葉は、いまやさまざまな場面で耳にします。しかし、それは単に新しい何かをつくったり、話題性を求めたりするだけで叶うのでしょうか。本当に大切なのは、まず地域を知ること。そのために“ひと”を知ること。そして、新しい可能性へとつながる架け橋を少しずつ築いていくことではないでしょうか。もちろん、そこには乗り越えるべき障壁も数多く存在します。けれど、向き合わなければ見えてこないし、乗り越えることもできない。地道だけれど大切な取り組みを、どれだけ丁寧に続けていけるかが、いま問われているのかもしれません。

地域の可能性を拓いていくために、コーリーさんの取り組みから学べることは少なくありません。グローバルな視点だからこそ見えてくるローカルの価値があります。そして、その価値を支えているのは、やはり“ひと”です。一人ひとりが持つ“善さ”を丁寧につなぎ、紡いでいくこと。その積み重ねの先に生まれる関係性が、地域の未来に新しい“楽しい”ストーリーを生み出していきます。だからこそ、コーリーさんのような丁寧で自然体な関わり方を、私たちも共有しながら実践していきたいですね。

Delivering good connections to good people — Corey Jones of apts.jp.

Creative Guild is a community of people who work and live in many different places, starting from Minato City, all with the shared desire to create meaningful and enjoyable moments together. In this Guild Directory, we introduce unique individuals connected through Creative Guild. This time, we are featuring Corey Jones of apts.jp. Focusing on vacant homes found across local communities, Corey is taking on the challenge of connecting local communities and global residents — linking people to people across cultures.

Corey is originally from North Carolina in the United States. After gaining experience in the hospitality industry, including working on the front lines of hotel operations, he also became involved in community initiatives, supporting member engagement and community programs. Through these experiences, he developed a strong ability to engage with diverse people and bring them together. Later, he relocated to Japan and moved into the real estate field. In particular, he began focusing on vacant homes in regional areas, promoting initiatives that respect and preserve the cultural and historical value of local properties while finding new ways to utilize them. Today, as a member of apts.jp, Corey supports foreigners searching for homes in Japan and continues connecting people across countries and communities.

What Corey values most is “goodness.” He believes that every person carries an essential goodness within them — a way of being that reflects who they truly are. Likewise, each community holds invisible yet deeply felt values cultivated over long periods of time. When different people and cultures encounter each other, new possibilities naturally emerge. With this perspective, Corey engages with both people and places thoughtfully yet naturally, approaching each situation with care and openness. The relationships that grow from these encounters become shared assets for everyone involved — something Corey sees as one of the most meaningful outcomes of his work.

Today, we often hear phrases such as “regional revitalization” and “local development.” But can these truly be achieved simply by creating something new, organizing flashy events, or generating attention on social media? Perhaps what matters most is first understanding the region itself — and understanding the people who live there. From that understanding, bridges to new possibilities can gradually be built. Of course, many barriers must be overcome along the way. Yet unless we face those barriers directly, we cannot see them clearly, nor can we overcome them. The real question may be how patiently and sincerely we can continue these steady and essential efforts.

There is much we can learn from Corey’s approach as we consider how to unlock the potential of local communities. A global perspective can often reveal the hidden value of local places. And ultimately, what sustains that value is people. By carefully connecting and weaving together the goodness each person brings, new relationships begin to emerge. From those relationships, new and joyful stories for the future of these communities can take shape. That is why Corey’s thoughtful yet natural way of engaging with people is something we would all do well to share and put into practice.
