When AI Becomes a Romantic Partner:
An Honest Conversation About Connection

Back to the Japanese version.

OMOBIZ!, brought to you by members of Creative Guild, brings hosts Tetsuya Miki and Zack, also known as “AI Papa” Yuta Sato, together to consider our relationship with AI. What changes when we approach it as someone to consult, a friend, or even a romantic partner? This themed conversation opens questions that convenience alone cannot answer.

How far does talking to AI resemble building a relationship with another person, and where does it differ? The conversation begins with the idea of AI as a friend or partner. A useful starting point is to ask what we want from the exchange before deciding whether it is good or bad. Ease, reassurance, and differences of opinion: which experiences matter to us?

The discussion also turns to recreating the voice of someone who has died. People may respond very differently to hearing such a voice. The topic invites us to consider what technology makes possible alongside what we and the people around us actually want. When technology touches cherished memories, the feelings of everyone involved deserve attention.

Other topics include connecting with grandchildren remotely and a remotely operated rubbish bin. These apparently different ideas share a question: how do we engage with people and things at a distance? Looking beyond a list of digital features to imagine a specific moment in everyday life makes both the benefit and the concerns easier to identify.

The hosts also discuss accommodating responses and the experience of an AI that does not disagree. Does an easy conversation necessarily make a good relationship? How do we retain both reassuring exchanges and opportunities to encounter another perspective? The question of what we would do if AI disappeared offers a chance to reflect on what we rely on and to choose our own distance from technology.

Rather than settling on one answer, the episode uses friendship, romance, memory, and family connections to ask what kind of relationships we hope for. What would you choose to share with AI, and what would you choose to discuss with another person? Watch the full episode and consider a distance that feels right for you as Miki and Zack explore these questions.
