OMOBIZ! Vol.6-4:
Funding Was the Biggest Challenge—Why Reiya Tanaka Rejects a Win-at-All-Costs Offer
OMOBIZ!, a program brought to you by members of Creative Guild, is hosted by Tetsuya Miki and Zack (Yuta Sato), also known as AI Papa. Their guest is Reiya Tanaka, owner of FC PHOENIX. Episode 4 looks at funding, sponsors, and the principles that hold an organization together. How can a growing club secure the money it needs while protecting the kind of football it wants to play?
The episode’s official highlights describe a practical challenge: operating costs rise as the club moves into higher divisions and attracts players. They also raise the difficulty of making firm claims about advertising returns for sponsors. Ambition alone cannot sustain an organization. What can it honestly promise its supporters, and what remains uncertain? That question matters well beyond football.
Tanaka’s approach treats companies and sponsors as teammates. Looking only at a financial transaction can obscure what the parties hope to build together. How might a supporter participate in the future the club wants to create? Articulating that shared purpose, alongside questions about short-term returns, may provide a starting point for a lasting relationship.
Another focus is keeping the organization’s core intact. The episode introduces what Tanaka learned after bringing in an external coach for the first time that season. Its title also points to rejecting an offer centered on recruiting strong players and taking charge. When welcoming someone with expertise, what should be delegated, and what values need to remain shared? Results and principles have to be considered together.
The program also introduces how the players spent 50 hours in online meetings during the pandemic to agree on five values. There may be something important in the process itself: participants taking time to formulate principles they can make their own. Does your organization have shared words it can return to when a difficult decision puts its direction under pressure?
Raising funds, welcoming people, and maintaining a basis for decisions are connected challenges. FC PHOENIX offers material for considering what should change as an organization grows and what it should retain. Try naming one value you would want a new supporter or teammate to understand first. Watch the full episode for Tanaka’s perspective on running the club.
