Let What You Love Expand Your Choices in Life!
Manabu Kagatani: Crossing Boundaries of Mindset Through Playfulness and Making Things Together
Creative Guild is a community of people in and beyond Minato City who want to create enjoyable moments in the places where they live and work. Our Guild Directory introduces the distinctive people we have met through this community. This time, we feature Manabu Kagatani, who has spent many years working on product development at a major corporation. Guided by curiosity and the things he loves, Kagatani has engaged in activities beyond his workplace to explore more choices in life. For him, crossing boundaries is not just about leaving a company or shedding a title. It also means questioning the assumptions we carry within ourselves. He is exploring what it would take to create opportunities for people to discover their own possibilities and try something new with others.
Kagatani is an engineer with around 25 years of experience, ranging from product development to project management. He built his career around the excitement of creating products that people around the world would use. In his forties, he began to reconsider how he worked and lived, which led him beyond the workplace. While studying psychology and coaching, he met not only people with backgrounds similar to his own, but also business owners and independent professionals with very different perspectives. Discovering that there were other ways to live and work became a source of motivation. He went on to help run a community in Yokohama where people could meet and exchange ideas across organizational boundaries.
What matters to Kagatani is expanding the choices available in life. Rather than defining his possibilities only by the circumstances or roles he has been given, he wants to be able to choose what he loves and what he wants to try. Playfulness and an openness to questioning familiar assumptions are essential to that outlook. He does not want job titles, age, or professional identities to confine his world. Instead, he approaches unfamiliar people and experiences with curiosity. Spaces where people from different organizations, fields, and walks of life meet are important to him because they offer fresh stimulation and unexpected discoveries.
Yet the longer we work in familiar settings and build up experience, the easier it can become to narrow our own sense of possibility. We may tell ourselves, “This is the only kind of work I can do,” or, “It is too late for me to start something new.” Companies may offer many career paths, but we have fewer opportunities to think about how we want to live and enjoy life as a whole. Crossing boundaries often brings to mind changing jobs, becoming independent, or taking part in external activities. But perhaps the more fundamental task is to move beyond the inner rules about what we ought to be. Without a shift in mindset, we might encounter a new world and still fail to recognize what it could make possible.
Looking ahead, Kagatani hopes for a world where people can move beyond those inner barriers and discover new possibilities through what they love. A shared interest in cars or making things could bring together people who might never otherwise meet. A spontaneous idea could turn into an unexpected creation when someone else brings a different skill or experience. Kagatani says he enjoys watching people happily work together and create something, rather than always being the person at the center directing them. Someone else joins another person’s “I’d like to try that,” and new experiences and relationships follow. Perhaps those small, playful crossings of boundaries will make life a little freer—and a lot more enjoyable—for everyone.
