The Future of Our Communities Starts Close to Home.
Shoichi Mototaka’s Vision for Co-creation Through Human Aspirations and Technology
President and Representative Director, NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS SOLUTIONS, Inc.

Back to the Japanese version.

Creative Guild is a community of people who live and work in various places, starting from Minato City, and who want to create joyful moments together. In this Guild Directory, we introduce unique individuals connected through Creative Guild. This time, we meet Shoichi Mototaka, President and Representative Director of NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS SOLUTIONS. Bringing together his care for local communities and the possibilities of advanced digital technology, he continues to build opportunities for the future, thoughtfully and from the ground up.

Originally from Kagoshima Prefecture, Mototaka has lived in seven prefectures, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, through work transfers and other chapters of his life. Experiencing the distinctive appeal of each place firsthand has made regional revitalization a lifelong personal pursuit. At NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS SOLUTIONS, the company he leads, technologies including AI, IoT, and security solutions help address the challenges facing small and medium-sized businesses, mid-market companies, and local governments across all 47 prefectures. In Kitakyushu, these activities include collaboration with Machi-Wa-Team-Da, a general incorporated association and Creative Guild partner, to create value rooted in the local community.

At the heart of Mototaka’s approach are the feelings and aspirations we hold as individuals—and our relationships with the places that have shaped them. What do people cherish? What kind of life and future do they hope for? Behind those hopes lie local landscapes and cultures, relationships, and accumulated experiences. By visiting communities and speaking with people individually, he seeks to understand these connections. That understanding reveals how technology can serve them. There are people’s aspirations, the communities that have nurtured them, and technologies that can help bring them to life. Connecting these elements and developing them into something useful in practice is central to his approach. Engaging with people’s hopes and their communities, and opening up possibilities through technology: this is Mototaka’s distinctive style of co-creation.

The more familiar our landscapes, cultures, and relationships become, the harder it can be to recognize their quality and distinctiveness. Things nurtured and protected over many years can become so much a part of everyday life that we overlook them. Meanwhile, novelty and passing trends readily capture our attention. And when we try to communicate a community’s value or bring about change, rational explanations and sound logic alone do not necessarily move people to act. Each person carries memories, relationships, and attachments they cherish. Alongside considering what is right, we need to engage with what people feel and hope for. We must remember that people are moved by emotion.

That is why Mototaka’s approach to co-creation is essential in a time of rapid change and diverse perspectives. Begin by looking again at the landscapes and cultures close to home, and listening to the people who live there. Connect with people from other places and fields, and gain a little distance from which to rediscover your community’s qualities and strengths. Bring those discoveries together, and try something that feels interesting and manageable. With the aspirations woven through that process as a foundation, adapt flexibly to evolving technology and put its capabilities to work toward a future you wish to create together. This is the kind of thoughtful, steady effort we, too, would like to continue.
