For the Joy of a Good Story
Creator Alexandre Kosmakis on Bringing Imagination to Life

Back to the Japanese version.

Creative Guild is a community of people connected through Minato City and beyond, creating enjoyable opportunities to work, live and spend time together. Our Guild Directory introduces the distinctive people we meet along the way. This time, we feature Alexandre Kosmakis, a French creator working in Japan. He creates films populated by original characters and distinctive worlds, guided by a simple wish: to give audiences a good story to enjoy.

Alexandre’s creative journey began with drawing manga. When he discovered cameras, he decided to bring the world he had been drawing to the screen. At nineteen, he made his first film, an approximately two-hour-and-fifteen-minute production combining animation and live action. The experience drew him deeper into filmmaking. He went on to experiment through short films while refining scripts for longer projects alongside them. Building on that experience, he expanded his work around writing and directing to include editing and character design, creating advertising videos and music videos while developing original projects. Today, he creates videos with artists, athletes and people in a range of professions based in Japan, while exploring new opportunities to collaborate with companies, local governments and others.

Alexandre wants stories to offer a chance to step away from everyday life, enjoy worlds we have never seen and feel freely. This wish supports his creative work. Rather than teaching a lesson or leading viewers toward a single answer, he first wants them to become absorbed in the story itself. He weaves feelings of family, friendship and love into imaginary worlds, leaving each audience member free to decide what to take from them. Even when a story includes hardship or sadness, he hopes to leave viewers with a positive outlook on the world. He seeks to convey human warmth and the capacity to overcome barriers through stories people can enjoy.

A constant flow of information and social problems we cannot ignore. Without realizing it, we find ourselves surrounded by pressures and called upon to respond to difficult realities. As we search for practical answers, do we draw a boundary around what seems possible, stopping ourselves from imagining what we truly want to do or the worlds we wish could exist? Becoming absorbed in a story, we laugh, cry and feel joy as those feelings arise. Such moments can give the mind a little rest and allow us to imagine beyond familiar frameworks. And that imagination can, in turn, lead us to bring something into being in the real world. Yet how often do we leave room for those moments?

Alexandre hopes to share stories that cross such boundaries and allow people to feel freely. In uncertain times, imagining that another kind of world could exist, or that we might try something ourselves, can become a powerful force for change. That possibility matters to people seeking to change an organization, bring new energy to a community or create something new. At the starting point of bringing a better future into being, perhaps there is something of what Alexandre values: a heart ready simply to enjoy a good story, and the imagination that grows from it.
