Opening New Possibilities for Dentistry Through Local Connections
Dr. Keiji Udagawa, Director of Udagawa Dental Clinic in Urayasu, Envisions a Testing Ground Rooted in Everyday Life
Creative Guild is a community rooted in Minato City, bringing together people who live and work in different places and want to create enjoyable experiences. This directory introduces the distinctive people connected through the Guild. Here, we meet Dr. Keiji Udagawa, director of Udagawa Dental Clinic in Urayasu. Through years of caring for patients, he has built experience and relationships that he hopes to draw on to open his community-based practice as a testing ground rooted in everyday life, creating new possibilities for dentistry.
His work is grounded in close relationships with patients and the local community. Patient data accumulated over approximately twenty years, together with insights from daily conversations, have informed technology aimed at improving well-being, for which a patent application is pending. To bring this technology into practical use, he is also exploring collaboration across disciplines. His participation in a hands-on leadership development course hosted by the Minato City Industrial Promotion Center is one example of how he continues to open doors by engaging with people beyond healthcare.
What matters most to him is the reality of everyday practice. He listens to patients, tries things himself, and reflects on what he observes and feels. The practical understanding developed through careful daily clinical work sustains his inquiry. He considers new technology from both medical and business perspectives: how will it work in an actual practice, and whom will it help? This process of testing and learning in real situations provides a foundation for making technology usable. To extend its social impact beyond his own work, he also hopes to offer the distinctive value of a locally rooted testing ground.
Healthcare and well-being are familiar terms in business today. They concern important social challenges. But how closely do our conversations about them connect with lived experience? Are we relying on theories and surface-level knowledge? Are we connecting with the people who need to be involved, and examining the issues carefully from different perspectives? Progress in this field takes time. That is why we need places grounded in everyday life, where ideas can be tested patiently and their results examined again and again.
His initiative is a challenge shaped around our daily lives and the futures ahead of us. A community-based dental practice can be a meeting point for knowledge and technology from many fields. When people who previously had no connection come together to test ideas and learn, new roles and value can emerge. The testing ground he hopes to open could connect these possibilities. Turning technology into something that supports everyone’s everyday life may begin much closer to home than we imagine.
