小倉城庭園 館長 吉柳 正太郎さんが取り組む文化を育てる人づくり

港区を起点にいろんなところで働く・暮らす、楽しい時間を創りたい人たちによるコミュニティCreative Guild。このギルド名鑑では、そんなCreative Guildでつながったユニークな方々をご紹介しています。今回ご紹介するのは、一般社団法人 まちはチームだのメンバーで、 小倉城庭園館長の吉柳 正太郎さん。完全じゃないからこそ“楽しい”。そのスタンスを大切にしながら、文化の担い手となる人を育てることに、日々の事業を通じて取り組んでいます。

小倉城庭園は、小倉城の城内に位置する、大名庭園と武家書院を復元した文化施設です。2025年より館長を務める吉柳正太郎さんのもと、池を中心に歩いて楽しむ池泉回遊式の日本庭園として、四季折々の景観とともに小倉城天守を望む眺めが大きな特徴となっています。園内では、歴史的な文化芸術品の展示に加え、書院棟でのアフタヌーンティーや本格的な茶道体験など、日本文化を身近に体感できる空間が広がっています。

そんな吉柳さんが大事にしているのは、誠実に試行錯誤する楽しさです。それは、文化を「完成されたもの」として扱うのではなく、人と人との関わりの中で育ち続けるものとして捉える姿勢でもあります。わからないことや足りなさを面白がり、突っ込まれながら一緒に成長していく。だからこそ、日々の仕事では感謝と楽しさを忘れず、あえて“スキ”を残す。そして、立場や年齢を越えて対話をする余白をつくり、人が安心して試行錯誤できる場を整え続ける。そうした日常の積み重ねを通じて、次の世代が文化を担っていくための土台を築いています。

少子高齢化や価値観の多様化が進む今、文化施設には「保存」だけでなく、「次の担い手をどう育てるか」という問いが突きつけられています。さらに、文化の精神を継承しながらも、時代の流れを取り込み、新たな文化を創発していくことが求められています。しかし、経済合理性が強く重視される現代社会において、こうした文化的価値が後回しにされてきた側面も否定できません。だからこそ今、文化の本質的な価値を理解し、試行錯誤を通じてそれを実践できる人財の存在が、これまで以上に重要になっています。

文化施設は、時間軸や空間軸を超えて、異なる価値観や世代、知識や技術をつなぎ、新しい時代の扉を開く場なのかもしれません。吉柳さんは、文化に関わる人づくりというカタチで、その可能性を日々実践しています。そしてその取り組みは、未来の“楽しい”を築いていくことにもつながっています。こうした未来に“楽しい”を継承していく取り組みはCreative Guildとしてもぜひ応援していきたいですし、なによりその実践の機会をより多くの人たちと手を取り合って広げていきたいですね。

“Fun Because It’s Not Perfect”

The Work of Shotaro Kiryuu, Director of Kokura Castle Garden

Creative Guild is a community of people who want to create joyful moments while working and living in various places, starting from Minato City. In this Guild Directory, we introduce unique individuals connected through Creative Guild. This time, we feature Shotaro Kiryuu, a member of Machiwa Teamda Association and the Director of Kokura Castle Garden. Embracing the idea that things are fun precisely because they are not perfect, Kiryuu dedicates his daily work to nurturing people who will become the next carriers of culture.

Kokura Castle Garden is a cultural facility located within the grounds of Kokura Castle, featuring a restored daimyo garden and samurai residence. Since assuming the role of director in 2025, Kiryuu has overseen the garden as a stroll-style Japanese landscape garden centered around a pond, offering seasonal scenery and a striking view of Kokura Castle’s main keep. In addition to exhibitions of historical and cultural artworks, visitors can enjoy afternoon tea in the Shoin building and authentic tea ceremony experiences, making Japanese culture accessible and tangible in everyday life.

What Kiryuu values most is the joy of sincere trial and error. For him, culture is not something “completed” and preserved, but something that continues to grow through human relationships. He finds curiosity in uncertainty and insufficiency, welcoming feedback and growing together with others. That is why, in his daily work, he intentionally leaves room for imperfection—while never forgetting gratitude and enjoyment. By creating space for dialogue beyond positions and age, and by continuously shaping an environment where people feel safe to experiment, he is building a foundation for the next generation to take on cultural stewardship.

As societies face declining birthrates, aging populations, and increasingly diverse values, cultural institutions are now being asked not only to preserve heritage, but also to cultivate future caretakers. At the same time, they are expected to honor tradition while embracing change and fostering new cultural expressions. Yet in a world where economic efficiency often takes priority, such cultural values have frequently been sidelined. This is precisely why people who truly understand the essence of culture—and who can put it into practice through experimentation—are more important than ever.

Cultural institutions may be places that transcend time and space, connecting different values, generations, knowledge, and skills to open doors to new eras. Kiryuu embodies this possibility through his commitment to developing people who engage with culture. His work contributes to building a more joyful future. As Creative Guild, we wholeheartedly support initiatives that pass this sense of “fun” into the future, and we hope to expand these opportunities by joining hands with many more people along the way.
