People and Sake: More Interesting Together.
featuring Sake WorldTAMACOCO Vol.4 Event Report
On October 28, we held TAMACOCO Vol.4 at Eiyou Monster in Shirokane-Takanawa. This time, blended sake took center stage. In collaboration with Kyoto-based Sake World, people of different generations and nationalities came together through a shared respect for Japanese sake.
On the table were blended sakes from Sake World’s Assemblage Club brand, alongside recommended bottles from its partner breweries: the light, gently sweet Kasumi, the rich layers of umami in Taro, and Koka, built on a base of aged sake. Each had its own character, and tasting them was a new experience in itself. Eiyou Monster once again provided its comforting homemade dishes. Every carefully prepared dish brought out the flavors of the sake, leaving us well fed and content.
Junpei Mukouyama from Sake World joined us online. At the heart of sake blending is a question: what flavors and ways of enjoying sake do we want to offer? With humor, he shared the stories behind choosing and combining sakes around that concept. These collaborations across brewery boundaries are supported by relationships of trust built through years of working together. Each glass carries the makers’ skills, the character of the land, time spent aging, and new challenges. Learning about that background made the sake in front of us feel richer, too. Questions kept coming, and our spontaneous conversation over sake ran for more than an hour.
Conversations among participants flowed just as freely. Questions from a university student writing a graduation thesis on the appeal of sake led us to talk about why we first became interested in it and what we love about it. Even when we drink the same sake, each of us experiences it differently. Sharing those differences became a way to connect across generations and nationalities, mix perspectives, and open up new possibilities. Without exchanging business cards, people naturally discovered one another’s curiosity and what mattered to them. Sake, carrying both flavor and the intentions of its makers, became a catalyst for those connections. The gathering also sparked ideas for new initiatives, some of which are already getting started.
Sake World also offers the opportunity to create an original sake blend, and Creative Guild will be making one of its own. Its name is “Yohaku-san, nomu?” We are planning a blend with sweetness and umami that can be enjoyed slowly on its own, and hope to share it at the next TAMACOCO. When different personalities come together—whether people or sake—new possibilities open up. That time together nourishes us and gives us energy to move forward. We hope everyone can have a place like this. Above all, it is fun, and that makes us feel it will naturally continue to grow in all kinds of ways.
