From Rethinking a Professional Dream to Building a Company Through Thoughtful Football: Reiya Tanaka, Episode 2
OMOBIZ!, brought to you by members of Creative Guild, welcomes FC PHOENIX owner Reiya Tanaka for a second episode with Tetsuya Miki and Zack, also known as “AI Papa” Yuta Sato. From childhood football to thoughtful play and the kind of club he wants to build, the conversation asks how an experience of difficulty can inform the choices that follow.
Tanaka recalls starting football in his first year of primary school and realizing in junior high that becoming a professional was unlikely. Feelings of inadequacy when comparing physique and speed form part of the starting point. He discusses that experience as a reason to rethink how he played, rather than simply a convenient prelude to success. The gap between an imagined path and our actual circumstances may feel familiar to many readers.
His response was to use his head in football. Rather than compete on physical attributes alone, he considered the situation and adapted to an opponent’s movements. The episode includes a concrete example about responding to an opponent’s jump when contesting a ball in the air. Understanding our own circumstances need not only close off possibilities; it can help us search for another approach.
The discussion then turns to the club Tanaka wanted to support. Starting from his own feeling that he had not found one, he describes building a team that respects opponents, referees, and teammates. This is best heard as an explanation of what he values, rather than a judgement on every existing club. What attitudes do we hope to find in an activity we love? That question can become a reason to build something ourselves.
Respect and competitive strength are considered together. Tanaka’s story develops into a vision for a club that does not treat the two as separate alternatives. How do we maintain respect for others when we want to win? Workplaces and communities face similar choices about how to pursue results. Sharing the way we want to achieve a goal, as well as the goal itself, may give colleagues a common point of reference.
From recognizing the difficulty of a professional career to adapting his play and articulating a club’s values, Tanaka offers a way to reconsider circumstances and dissatisfaction as material for a new choice. What approaches or commitments would you take from an experience that did not go as planned? Watch the full episode to hear about his football beginnings and his wish to combine respect with strength.
