~ PLAY & WELLBEING

Failure Does Not Define Your Worth.
Exploring Wellbeing and Supportive Connections with Jon Pritikin
PLAY & WELLBEING Event Report
On October 14, 2026, Creative Guild hosted “PLAY & WELLBEING: Adults, Let’s Play for Real.” at Victory Family Centre Tokyo in Nishinippori. The gathering was made possible through Chee Kit, a pastor and a member of the Creative Guild community. Around 20 participants from Japan and other countries came together for an evening of play, connection, and personal reflection.
Beyond the Strength to Bend a Frying Pan
The evening began with Jon Pritikin bending a frying pan with his bare hands. It was remarkable to see up close. Yet what stayed with us was the personal story behind that physical strength.
Growing up, Jon experienced learning and communication difficulties, bullying, and loneliness. A turning point came when people entered his life who believed in his potential and supported him. Today, through his anti-bullying initiative “Feel the Power” and his wider speaking work, he brings encouragement to schools and companies around the world.
Jon openly shares his failures and even the moments when he struggles to find his words. These stories help listeners lower their guard and connect his experiences with their own. His appeal lies in that combination of striking physical demonstrations, humor, and a willingness to show vulnerability.
Making a Mistake Does Not Make You a Mistake
One of the central messages Jon shared was that school and other people’s judgments do not have to determine our future. Experiencing failure does not make us failures as people.
Sometimes, concern about what others think stops us from trying. Sometimes, an uncertain future makes it difficult to believe in our own possibilities. Jon encouraged us to listen to our inner voice and take a step forward, while valuing the friends and companions who support us along the way.
His message about continuing, one step at a time, carried the weight of his own experience of facing difficulties and continuing to try.
People Who Believe in Our Potential—at School and at Work
The evening also raised questions for educators and people working in HR and people development. Do we see someone only through a particular grade, result, or failure? What can we say when that person is ready to try again?
In his work with companies, Jon also emphasizes that even people who appear highly successful have moments when they need encouragement. Behind every title and achievement is a person with their own experiences and concerns.
Alongside attending to our own mindset, we can nurture relationships where people feel comfortable talking about difficulties and receiving support. The evening offered an opportunity to consider both aspects of wellbeing in schools and workplaces.
Different Languages, a Shared Experience of Play
During the social time, participants enjoyed traditional Japanese toys, including spinning tops and kendama. Japanese and international participants tried them together, sharing the experience of play.
Before worrying about speaking a language well, we can begin by enjoying something together. Play offers another way to connect.
Believing in the future, staying connected with friends, and continuing one step at a time: these themes resonated with Creative Guild’s values of friendship, steady everyday practice, and beginning with fun.
Valuing our own possibilities—and believing in the possibilities of someone beside us—can begin through small, everyday interactions. That is something we can carry into our schools, workplaces, and communities.
